Charley

I read this book recently...

Synopsis of the book ::: John Steinbeck travels across America with his dog (Charley) for 3 months or so.  He writes about his encounters with other people and his own thoughts as he journeys across America.

Finishing the book, I really wanted to get a dog, name him Charley and take him with me on my year-long run across Iowa.

I asked one of my friends if this was a good idea.

He responded, "No."

So I didn't.

It wouldn't be smart to bring an animal with me.  I don't think many of my host homes would enjoy that.

However, on my way home today, I had a brilliant thought, instead of bringing a real animal, I could bring a stuffed animal...

:::So I thought I would bring a stuffed Wolf with me:::

Just messing...

Actually, I thought I would bring along a stuffed animal.

::: I would like to introduce to you to :::

Charley
(fitting huh?)

I've had this old muppet toy for a long time.

Maybe it will become my Wilson...  Hopefully not.  Hopefully I won't get too lonely on my trek...

I find even more meaning in taking Charley with me, cause my Gramps (who passed away several years ago) was a huge fan of this stuffed animal.

And my gramps middle name was Charles.

I'm thankful

thank·ful

  [thangk-fuhl]  Show IPA
adjective
feeling or expressing gratitude; appreciative.

-----

Is it cliche to write a blog post saying I'm thankful a day before Thanksgiving?

Probably...

However, it's true.  I am thankful, especially when I am reminded of the importance of friends, family and faith.

Thanksgiving has the ability to realign me to the things that are truly important.

Here are some things I'm thankful for... in pictures

Levi, Noah, David and Rebekah
Andrew, Cory and Cody

Family

More family

Colorado

Food
Traveling to distant lands

the people following the AMS facebook and twitter page.

my family, mentors, friends, who support what I am doing.

health, and the abilities of running and speaking.

those who have sponsored me and will sponsor me this coming year.

Will Run For Food

"You can praise God by peeling a spud if you peel it to perfection. Don't compromise. Compromise is a language of the devil. Run in God's name and let the world stand back and in wonder."
From the Movie Chariots of Fire
In 54 days I will begin the Awake My Sole trek: a year long run across the beautiful state of Iowa.

Since stepping down from my position as a full time middle school director, I have become a full time speaker and runner.

My buggy I will be carrying my belongings as I trek across Iowa

Since August I have been:
setting up host homes in 20 towns
setting up speaking engagements
forming teams of people
creating schedules
writing talks
aligning sponsors
meeting with people about what I am doing
running, stretching
working with a graphic designer
reading and studying
dreaming
and tons more...

It has become a full time job, and I love every bit of it.

Stickers designed by Brennan (want one?  Comment below)

"You came to see a race today. To see someone win. It happened to be me. But I want you to do more than just watch a race. I want you to take part in it. I want to compare faith to running in a race. It's hard. It requires concentration of will, energy of soul. You experience elation when the winner breaks the tape - especially if you've got a bet on it. But how long does that last? You go home. Maybe you're dinner's burnt. Maybe you haven't got a job. So who am I to say, "Believe, have faith," in the face of life's realities? I would like to give you something more permanent, but I can only point the way. I have no formula for winning the race. Everyone runs in her own way, or his own way. And where does the power come from, to see the race to its end? From within. Jesus said, "Behold, the Kingdom of God is within you. If with all your hearts, you truly seek me, you shall ever surely find me." If you commit yourself to the love of Christ, then that is how you run a straight race."  From the Movie Chariots of Fire
