Allowing the bruised heel to heal

A week ago I was in North Dakota and I went for a morning run.  I was breaking in some new shoes.
My current running shoe is the New Balance 890
I was able to run to the No-longer-flooded-Missouri River.
Notice the sand sediment on the shoreline.  About 3 months prior the river was flooded.
In the process of running to the river and back, I landed goofy on the ground and I bruised my heel.  I'm not quite sure how this happened, but my heel was super sore, and was painful to run on.

I decided to take a week-long-break from running.  It's been tough, especially when I just want to get out and run.  I find a lot of joy in running.

I realize if I don't take breaks from running, allowing my body to heal, my body will break down, and long term I won't be able to do what I truly love to do.

Taking breaks are good.  Not just in running, but in all aspects of life.  We might get into a busy-routine, neglecting some of the important things: family, friends, health, other passions.

Maybe it is time for you to take a rest from a specific thing.

Take a break.

Allow time for healing.

I run, because I love to run...

This last week I decided to run to Stone State Park in Sioux City Iowa, a 26.1 mile endeavor.

I was at mile 23, and I was crossing the Gordon Bridge in Sioux City, and I had no desire to continue on.

I stopped, looked over the edge of the bridge, and considered calling someone to come pick me up.  I was physically exhausted.  Hadn't eaten much, and knew I needed to get some food soon.

I had recently watched a video of a ultra runner named Geoff Roes, and in the video he says, "I train to embrace the runner's low."

It is so easy to enjoy running when everything is going smooth, your body is feeling great, and there is no pain or blisters, but when there is turmoil, doubt and frustration that is when you discover what you are made of.

Running can be similar to every encounter and obstacle we face in daily life.

On that bridge I said out-loud several times my running mantra, "I run, because I love to run, not because I have to run."

I love to run when it everything is going great, and funny to say, but I love to run when everything isn't going great.  Such is life.

Life can get us down, and it can be tough to endure, but it is the people who continue during the tough times who grow as a result of pushing through.

May you be challenged to get back up when you are knocked down, to push through when you want to give up.

Come up with a mantra you can say when things start getting tough.  Maybe you can use it when you go out for a run, or in your daily life.

"I run, because I love to run, not because I have to run."
