Jim Every year, I burn a sections of the prairie , transforming and rejuvenating it. Hot flames stimulate wildflower seeds to germinate. As last year’s vegetation burns, the ground is coated with powdery black ash, which brings forth new growth in the early spring. The fire destroys invasive weeds and invites the prairie grasses to multiply and flourish. After reading your post, I thought about 1979 when our school (independence st. john’s ) took a week to walk to living history farm to see pope john paul II. Our hope was that he would hear of our pilgrimage and invite us to celebrate mass with him. We failed to have an appearance with him. But, his mass and homily set the stage for our life of land stewardship. Pope John Paul II in his homily urged people to be generous and to serve others and to have gratitude. He also spoke of the land as God’s creation. "The land is not only God's gift; it is also man's responsibility," the Pope said, according to the Des Moines Register. "You are stewards of some of the most important resources God has given the world. ... Conserve it well." We’re looking forward to your visit.
